SAVED BY THE BELLS

With the aid
of a small Agency back-up team, Lee captures Rostov, a Russian agent they’ve
been after for a long time. Naturally, Billy is very happy at the outcome of
the case and reluctantly agrees for Lee to have two weeks leave so he can
holiday in Bermuda.
The Russians
aren’t so happy and one of their top intelligence operatives in America,
Nicholas, orders two of his men to kidnap Scarecrow so that they can arrange a
trade – one important agent for another.
In the
meantime, Lee has interrupted Amanda birthday plans for Jaime and asked her
over to make arrangements for her to feed his fish while he’s away. Amanda
agrees and then, just as Lee is leaving, she notices a piece of mouldy cheese
and decides to clean his apartment up before she goes home. Lee leaves but,
across the road, Nicholas’ henchmen have pulled up in a van outside the block
of apartments and are watching the window with a pair of binoculars. Amanda
opens Lee’s window for some air and the men assume she’s Scarecrow. After a
quick phone call, during which Amanda inadvertently confirms to them she IS
Scarecrow, they break into the apartment and take her away at gunpoint.
Later that
day, an unhappy Lee is dragged into Billy’s office after having been taken from
his Bermuda bound plane. Francine plays him a recording that they had received
half an hour earlier with the Russians saying that they had Scarecrow. Lee is
confused until Billy pulls out a tub of fish food and then he suddenly realises
that they took Amanda by mistake. The Intelligence Oversight Committee meet to
discuss whether to make the trade and Dirk then has to inform Billy and Lee
that it won’t take place as Amanda isn’t important enough. Lee doesn’t take the
news well and Billy ends up asking him outright if there’s anything going on
between them. Lee just shakes his head and laughs so Billy says they’ll have to
wait and see what happens.
Unable to let
Amanda die in his place, Lee grabs Rostov from the Agency and arranges the
trade himself. The exchange takes place on a golf course and Lee gets Amanda
back safe. Unfortunately, Lee then gets suspended and faces charges of treason
for his disobedience. The only way to clear his name is to capture Rostov
again. Tto do this Amanda has to remember where she was taken. As she was bound,
gagged AND stuffed in a crate, she has to rely on things she heard, a dog
barking, ice cream bells, to pinpoint the location. They find the house and
then get captured and taken to a warehouse where they plan to put Scarecrow
(Amanda) in a fridge and ship her to Moscow.
Lee and Amanda
escape by Amanda pretending to bite into a poison capsule. She then calls for
back-up while Lee tries to hold the Russians at bay.
Unfortunately
he gets caught again and it’s down to ‘Scarecrow’ to rescue him. Amanda sneaks
back into the warehouse and climbs up a rack, loosens some tyres and pushes
them over onto the men taking Lee away.
Lee hides and
Amanda’s voice rings out around the warehouse for the Russians to put their
guns down or they’ll die. They believe what she says and, much to Lee’s
annoyance, Amanda asks her ‘assistant’ to disarm them – which he does through
extremely gritted teeth. Rostov gets away but because they round up the rest of
the Russian agents, everything is alright.

ROMANCE:
Another
episode where we can see that Lee really cares for Amanda – he risked charges
of treason for her after all. The part where he comforts her after the trade is
very sweet although it doesn’t really have any romantic overtures as such –
more like good friends.
QUOTES:
BILLY: Lee,
we're not supposed to take this personally. It's our objectivity which makes us
effective.
LEE: Amanda is
dying in my place, that's as personal as it gets.
BILLY: If it
were another agent, would you feel the same way?
LEE: I don't
know.
AMANDA: They
were going to kill me. They thought I was you. I told them I wasn't, but they
wouldn't listen to me, they stuffed me in a crate.
LEE: I know, I
know.
AMANDA: I
don't know how anyone could mistake me for you, you're so much taller.
LEE: Just
relax, will you?
AMANDA: Oh,
sure, easy for you to say. You're not the one they're going to stuff in a
refrigerator and ship off to Moscow.
LEE: No, I'm
the one they're going to put up against a wall and shoot!
AMANDA: Well,
I guess that about wraps this one up. Our people are on the way. Anything else
I can do?
LEE: No. You
can leave your silver bullet and ride off.
