DAVE'S VAUXHALL VIVA E COUPE

Restoration Gallery

When Dave bought the Coupe, it was sprayed a Ford dark Bronze colour with a matt black bonnet and two thick stripes that went back over the roof and boot. The windscreen sported an extremely large and extremely tacky sticker across the top that read Vauxhall in white, drippy effect lettering. When it gets misted up, you can still see the outline of it even now! Having tried White Spirit and various other ways of trying to get of rid of it we are more than open for suggestions! Please…keep them clean…J

The Coupe also came with a trunkload of spares, including, lights, carb's, trim, etc. and had a Chevette engine of an indeterminate amount of mileage that was basically knackered.

Dave and Mark did their best to make the car run properly but after the restoration was complete, they made the decision to replace the engine with one from a 40,000 mile Viva and it has been better since.

Working on the original Chevette engine when the car was still the dark Bronze colour.

Apparently, there are a few essentials when it comes to restoring a car;

  1. Cherry Bakewell's - needed for those all important tea breaks that seem to happen every half hour.
  2. Paint - for the respray, naturally. Note: Don't buy too much! There's still enough 'Champagne Starfire' left over to respray every other car in our street!
  3. Underseal - so that you can get as messy as you possibly can. Tip: Don't follow someone around underneath - tendency to get the gloop flicked in your face.
  4. Patience - for those times when turn the screw one time too many and it shears off leaving you not able to MOT the car before Billing! Particular cases to look for are the calipers, bleed nipples, engine bolts, etc., etc.
  5. Petrol and Match - for those times when you've had enough and just want to set fire to the blasted thing because something else won't fit on or it won't start for no reason or it starts but won't keep running and you've adjusted every damn thing that needs adjusting!

Those minor things acquired; you're set to restore a car to its former glory! Yeah…good luck with that…J

Dave, Mark and my Dad prepare the car for its respray.

Rear view of prepared car.

Front wheel looks nice, eh? If you squint hard enough, you might even see a cherry bakewell or two!

Primered and ready for respray. TIP: Try not to do while it's raining (see above) - you have to keep pushing the car in and out of the garage in-between showers - takes longer to do then, LOL!

There she is all sprayed up with Abby the cat giving it her approval.

Lights have been fitted back on and she's looking good.

Dave working hard on the interior - he had to totally replace the carpet.

The boys stand proudly by their finished motors.
