FEARLESS DOTTY

An information broker called Hadj is shot by two agents who are after a book he's carrying. The book contains microdot designs of broadband filters that are used for neutralising close-combat laser assault weapons. Fatally wounded, Hadj manages to make it into a book shop run by his contact, a man called Keene.

Inside the shop, Dotty is browsing for a birthday present for Phillip. She finds one she wants to buy and then takes it over to Keene who puts it into a plastic bag while she gets out her cheque book. Hadj enters the shop and Keene presses a button under the counter in silent signal to the back room. A man called, Karlo, appears from the back and watches Hadj.

While Dotty writes a cheque for her purchase, Hadj hands over his book and Keene quickly shoves it into another plastic bag, identical to the one with Dotty's book in. Once Dotty has handed over her cheque, she picks up one of the plastic bags and the rest of her shopping and leaves.

Hadj collapses and dies. Karlo moves to the front of the shop then picks up the other plastic bag and pulls out the book. It's Dotty's! Keene realises she took the wrong bag and Karlo, suspicious that she may have switched them deliberately, leaves the shop to go after her. Outside, he sees her get into a cab and runs after it. Just as he reaches the cab it pulls away so he runs over to a brown car parked nearby and gets in the passenger side, ordering his partner, Ramad, to follow the taxi.

The two agents who shot Hadj are waiting outside the shop in another car. Seeing Karlo leave the shop, they think he now has the book and follow him.

The cab stops and Dotty gets out and goes into a café to meet Amanda. Karlo pulls up outside shortly after and also goes into the café, asking the waitress for a seat near to where the two women are seated. As they discuss Phillip's presents and upcoming birthday party, one of the two agents also enters the café and sits down at Karlo's table. Dotty and Amanda finish their drinks and then leave passing by the table that Karlo was at. He's gone but the agent is still sitting there with his mouth hanging open. The two women move on thinking the agent is drunk but in reality Karlo has killed him.

Amanda and her mother walk down the street and Dotty decides to by some flowers from a stall. Amanda takes her mother's packages and stands nearby. Karlo approaches and suddenly grabs her, trying to snatch the bags. He all but throws her into the road where she's nearly hit by a car. Dotty hears the commotion and runs to help her daughter, aided by the driver of the car. Karlo runs back to where Ramad is waiting and jumps in. He holds up the torn handle of a bag and Ramad angrily reminds of the trouble they'll be in if they don't get the book. They then drive off, passing the remaining agent who's still waiting for his partner.

At the Agency, Lee, Billy and Francine discuss Hadj's death and realise that there was a major buy going down. Amanda arrives and tells them about her mugging. Lee is annoyed that she didn't inform the police and tells her to go home and report it.

Back at the book shop, Keene hands over Dotty's cheque to Karlo and Ramad, who then decide to pay her a visit. Karlo breaks into Amanda's house and searches for the book. While there, Amanda and Dotty arrive home. Karlo hides in the hallway closet and covertly watches the two women put groceries away. As they work, Dotty asks Amanda questions about IFF and she eventually sits her mother down to explain, in a roundabout way, that there's things she's like to tell her about her work but she can't. Somewhat pacified, Dotty takes some of Phillip's presents upstairs to hide. Amanda takes the remaining bag and decides to hide it in the hallway closet.

As soon as she opens the door, Karlo lunges at her with a knife. She screams and pushes him back into the closet, causing him to fumble the knife. Amanda slams the door in his face and then runs into the kitchen and picks up a mallet. Karlo frees himself and then runs out of the house.

At the Agency, Billy informs Lee that whatever Hadj was selling is still up for sale. Lee is pleased then tells Billy he's had a semi-hysterical call from Amanda and leaves. He waits for her in the back yard and when she comes out, she tells him about the attack and that the man in her closet was the same guy who mugged her. Amanda is convinced that it's Agency related and eventually convinces Lee the same. Lee tells her to bring everything in the bags down to the Agency so that they can be examined. Amanda is reticent as they're Phillip's presents but Lee assures her that they'll be careful. He's also tells her that a security team is being set up to protect her house and family.

That evening at IFF, Francine and two other agents are going through the gifts, while Amanda gives a description of Karlo to an agent compiling a computer based photo-fit. One of the agents breaks a Captain Galaxy doll which has taken Amanda and Dotty four days to find - it was the last one in the city. Lee promises her a replacement and then urges her to continue with the description. Once completed, Lee recognises Karlo from the picture. He explains to Amanda that Karlo is a middle man for agents selling high value items to the Middle East. Amanda decides to get home to her family as quick as possible and Lee again assures her that she's got the best protection.

At the book shop, the agent from the beginning of the episode now has a new partner and knocks on the back door. He threatens Keene with a gun and the shopowner promptly writes down Amanda address for him.

Outside Amanda's house, agents are in position disguised as workmen. Amanda is cleaning the floor when Dotty appears and tells her she's off to her hairdressing appointment. Once she leaves, Amanda opens up the bread box and pulls out the book still wrapped in the bag, then goes over to phone Lee. She explains that she forgot that her mother had bought it and Lee asks what it is. Having promised her mother that she wouldn't look, Lee has to persuade her otherwise. She reluctantly opens the bag and pulls out a book called, Drought Cycles of Burma. Seeing the title, she realises that Dotty must have picked up the wrong bag by mistake. She tells Lee where her mother is and says she'll meet him there.

At Mr. Emilio's, the hairdressers, Dotty is under a dryer and has fallen asleep. Karlo gets out of his car and, after a nod to Ramad, he goes into Mr. Emilio's. Parked nearby, Lee and Amanda watch Karlo go in and then Lee tells her to wait while he gets out and casually follows the other man in. As soon as he's entered the hairdressers, Amanda also gets out and then races after Lee into the salon.

Karlo pulls out a knife and advances on an unspecting, Dotty. Lee draws his gun and calls out to him. The two men then start fighting, trashing the salon while Dotty sleeps on oblivious. Karlo finally gets away, leaving behind a worried Lee and Amanda.

Back at the Agency, Billy, Lee and Amanda are trying to figure out why Karlo is after the book when Francine enters holding a report from Cryptography which explains about the microdot. Now knowing what they're dealing with, the Agency can take action. Amanda guesses the book her mother had originally bought and is upset that they haven't got it. Billy assures her that they'll get her another copy as he has to visit Keene and Amanda tells him she needs it for 2pm the next day - just like a new Captain Galaxy.

At the Agency, Billy turns up to talk to Keene. He tells him that he has three options, he can either rot in jail, the Agency can leak that he's their man which would get him killed or he can work for them. He chooses to work for the Agency and before he leaves, Billy tells him to get a copy of the book Amanda wants.

Meanwhile, Karlo and Ramad hijack a van and turn up at Amanda's house. Karlo tells Ramad to go to the door as he might be recognised. Ramad does as he's told and across the street he's watched not only by his partner but by the two agents who are also after the book.

Inside the house, Dotty has the TV blaring because she has the electric mixer going.

Lee and Amanda arrive and take in the scene before them. Realising something is wrong, Lee warns the Agency people who immediately take action. Shots are exchanged but Dotty doesn't hear a thing. The Agency men chase off Ramad and Karlo. The two agents who are also after the book, take off after them, followed by Lee and Amanda. A chase ensues resulting in Lee and Amanda capturing Karlo.

The next day it's Phillip's party. Much to Amanda's amazement and pleasure, Lee turns up with a new Captain Galaxy doll and the book. He also goes on the praise her on her help with capturing Karlo and then she goes back into the house back to Phillip's party.

SCENE'S TO WATCH OUT FOR

Lee upset at Amanda's mugging.

Amanda trying to explain her job to Dotty using her dead dog, Pinto, as an example.

The hairdressers with Dotty sleeping through the massive fight going on behind her.

ROMANCE

Not much in this episode unfortunately. Lee's concerned about her welfare and runs when she calls about Karlo being in her house with a knife and he also gets the presents for Phillip's birthday even though he had to have the Captain Galaxy doll direct from Taiwan. He also notices that she's quiet when he drives her home from the Agency. All this shows he cares but can't really be classed as romance.

As for Amanda, well, she doesn't really show much affection towards Lee as she's more concerned with her mother in this episode.

QUOTES

AMANDA: I was mugged. In the middle of the street, broad daylight.

LEE: That's terrible!

FRANCINE: That's funny. You know, the same thing happened to me just last week. I was outside the airport making a surveillance pass and all of a sudden I felt this big arm lock around my neck from behind.

AMANDA: What did you do?

FRANCINE: Oh, I spiked his instep with my heel, thumbed his eyesockets, pressed my forearm against his larynx, and then brought up my knee in a lifting motion.

AMANDA: I just screamed.

FRANCINE: Hm. So did he.

AMANDA: Lee, I know you don’t think I have a very logical mind, but I have a very logical mind and I know that in my day to day living I don’t do anything that would warrant having a man hiding in my closet with a knife in his hand.

LEE: Amanda, listen. I promise you I will get you another Captain Galaxy. Trust me, huh?

AMANDA: Of course I trust you, but you don't know the toy market.

AMANDA: Well, sometimes I get the feeling that people get a little lost at the Agency. You know what I mean? Everybody is so concerned with spies and stolen formulas and secrets that, well, I don't know, sometimes it just starts to seem like it's a game.

LEE: Yeah, well, that game gets pretty serious at times. We can play it like a game, but we know it's just a cleaner battlefield.

LEE: Oh, I didn't mention it before, but you know that bit with the sprinkler and the hose?

AMANDA: Yes.

LEE: That was alright.

AMANADA: You were glad I was there.

LEE: Well, I…

AMANDA: I was glad I was there.

LEE: Yeah.
