MIKE GAMBIT
Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt) was a Major in the paratroopers and dabbled in motor racing before joining the Ministry and
Steed. A very tough young man, he's trained to the highest level in the martial arts and can take out more than one opponent in just a few seconds. Cool, calm and logical he's a vital part of the team.Unlike Steed, Gambit carries a gun (more than one actually). He is a proficient marksman and on more than one occasion he has saved the life of Steed and
Purdey due to his quick reflexes and quick thinking. He's also a ladies man and because he never stays with them too long, he has gained quite a reputation at the Ministry.Add to this, the fact that he hides behind a mask of playfulness and jokes with his colleagues and thereby doesn't let anyone get too close to him, you come up with someone who is a bit of a contradiction. A very private man with more to him than meets the eye if you can just get through the façade.
Gambit lives in an apartment that is full of electronic gadgets - at the touch of a button, his couch slides out and becomes a bed. In contrast to his tough and cool side he also has a little sparrow that visits him each morning that he feeds - what a softie, eh?
He has a strong bond of friendship with Steed and a there's a mutual respect between the two men of each others abilities. Although it's never stated, it comes across that he was partnered with Steed before Purdey was added to the mix. Steed relies heavily on Gambit to do most of his legwork and calls on him if any extra 'muscle' is needed for intimidation.
He also has a close friendship with Purdey and would seriously like it to develop further if she'd let him. However, her good natured refusals keep him from trying on anything too heavy. His feelings for her override the 'everyone's expendable' rule that the Security section work by and he will often put himself in the line of fire and take risks just so that she doesn't get hurt. In fact, she and on the odd occasion, Steed, seem to be the only ones that can spark any sort of emotional reaction out of him - unless he's chatting up a girl that is!
Just a quick mention of his cars: Gambit drove a red Jaguar XJS and also had a white Range Rover. Nice!
