HOLLOW VICTORY
BY JUDITH REEVES-STEVENS &

VERONICA:
Hey Ned, toss me back the next one and we’ll see how many we can keep up in the
air at once.
MALONE:
Well, um, Veronica, if we miss the morning thermals then we’ll have to cancel
the test flight.
VERONICA:
I remember when you used to have sense of humour.
MARGUERITE:
So Challenger, this new hydrogen evolver of yours, it’s not going to explode
like the one in your lab?
CHALLENGER:
I have made changes since then Marguerite.
The whole system is now completely sealed.
ROXTON:
You know sometimes George, I can’t decide which you
like more…building your contraptions or talking about them.
VERONICA
& MARGUERITE IN UNISON: Talking about them.
MARGUERITE:
Where on earth are we?
CHALLENGER:
We’re not on earth, we’re in it!
MARGUERITE:
Just what I’ve always wanted, a place that annoys me more than the plateau.
MARGUERITE:
Trust the men to fall for a pretty face.
MARGUERITE:
I don’t think he’s changed all that much…poor boy’s been in love with you since
the day you two first met.
VERONICA:
But I’m not in love with him, Marguerite.
MARGUERITE:
Are you sure?
VERONICA:
Well if I was in love with wouldn’t I follow him anywhere? Even to
MARGUERITE:
True love conquers all, yeah I’ve heard that before.
MARGUERITE:
I once followed a man all the way from
VERONICA:
What happened?
MARGUERITE:
Let’s just say after
VERONICA: oh, poor Roxton.
MARGUERITE:
Well if it is true love, he can follow me for a change.
VERONICA:
Oh, I think he would…well, at least for a little while.
MARGUERITE:
Just wish I knew where I was going.
MARGUERITE:
Typical, you do something nice for someone and no-one’s around to see it!
ALLYCE:
You are brave; setting out across my world, trusting my word when I am a
stranger to you.
MALONE:
Nowadays, when I do things like that my friends think I’m crazy…especially
Veronica.
ALLYCE:
What do you think?
MALONE:
I think I’ve been sitting on the sidelines watching for too long, taking notes
when I should’ve been taking action.
MARGUERITE:
Will she recover?
CHALLENGER:
Oh, that is a most likely outcome.
MARGUERITE:
Challenger, it’s the only outcome!
MALONE:
You know there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.
VERONICA:
Yeah, I do know.
MALONE:
It’s just that I haven’t always known where we stand.
VERONICA:
I think we both know that sometimes romance doesn’t last, but friendship can.
MARGUERITE:
Knowing Veronica, she’ll be the first one of us to make it off the plateau…and
she’s the only one of us that never wanted to leave.
ROXTON:
Wherever she lands, we’ll fine her.
MALONE:
Now she’s just like the rest of us…lost.
CHALLENGER:
And looking for a way home.
