THE LONG CHRISTMAS EVE

Double agent Ted Rudolph, codename Janus, wants to come in from the cold and gives the Agency two days, until 25th December, to find his daughter Karen and bring her to a cabin in the woods or he’ll go public with names of both Russian and U.S. agents. Not being able to find Rudolph’s daughter in such a short space of time, Billy gets Amanda to pose as Karen Rudolph and go with Lee to the cabin to meet her ‘father’. At the same time, two Russian agents are sent to follow Lee and Amanda and terminate them along with Rudolph. Lee notices them as they are trekking to the cabin but dismisses them as hunters.

Once at the cabin, Amanda plays her cover as Karen and Rudolph is taken in. Just as they are about to leave, Lee sees the two hunters lurking outside and realises that from the guns they’re carrying that they are KGB.

Back at the Agency, Billy and Francine can’t contact Lee and are informed by Billy’s superior that if Lee’s not back by 7pm then a commando team with orders of shoot to kill will be dispatched.

In the cabin, Lee and Rudolph form a plan to get overcome the KGB agents and so get away. During the ensuing shootout, Lee is badly injured when he’s shot in his right shoulder. One of the KGB agents, Ivan, is also shot but in his leg. Lee makes it back to the cabin and the KGB agents radio their superior what has happened. Their boss then decides to send in a team of his own to kill the three Americans.

Inside the cabin Lee has passed out and it’s night is falling. Amanda is determined to get the first aid kit from Lee’s car and uses a rag to make a white flag. Rudolph tries to stop her going outside but Amanda tells him she’s not his daughter but is in fact another agent and she’s going outside because she doesn’t want to see Lee die. She leaves the cabin holding up the white rag and calls out to the KGB agents for a truce. She tells them that they can go into the cabin where it’s warm while she retrieves the first aid kit. Dimitri, the agent that is unhurt, comes out of hiding and tells Amanda that he’ll get the kit if she’ll help him take Ivan into the cabin. She agrees.

Meanwhile, at the edge of the woods, the U.S. commando team has arrived and start to trek towards the cabin.

Back inside the cabin, Amanda tends to the two injured men and Dimitri returns with the first aid kit. There is a tense moment where Amanda has to remind both Rudolph and Dimitri that there are no guns allowed in the cabin – both men back down and Amanda continues to look after the wounded.

Outside, on the opposite side of the woods to the U.S. team, the Russian team arrives and starts trekking towards the cabin.

Lee finally wakes up and is shocked to discover Ivan and Dimitri sharing the cabin with them. Amanda explains to an incredulous Lee that they’ve called a truce. She then cooks some beans and dishes up dinner. Dimitri also contributes to the supper – he has herring and 110 proof vodka!

Soon the people inside are becoming friendlier, proposing toasts and singing carols. Outside, both teams have arrived and set up their guns on either side of the cabin. However upon hearing the singing they don’t do anything.

The next morning Amanda is home and Philip and Jaime come downstairs to find her asleep on the couch. As they open their presents Amanda wakes up and tells them to wake up Dotty. Once they go she phones Lee, who’s in hospital, and they wish each other a merry Christmas.

ROMANCE:

Not really romance but a chance for us to see how much Amanda cares for Lee in this episode. She’s distressed when she sees his wound and will risk the KGB to get a first aid kit for him. It may not be love but her feelings for Lee definitely run deep.

QUOTES:

DOTTY: What are they like, these people that you work for?

AMANDA: Just normal, everyday people.

LEE: I'm just not very big on parties.

FRANCINE: Oh, come on, it's Christmas! (She notices Amanda at the doorway) Oh, speaking of jolly, there she is. Our woman in suburbia, bearing gifts.

LEE: Now, don't be nasty, Francine, huh?

FRANCINE: I wouldn't dream of it.

AMANDA: So, how do you usually spend your Christmas?

LEE: On my living room couch, with a large bowl of guacamole dip, a perfectly chilled bottle of Dom Perignon '73, and a good football game.

AMANDA (nodding): Lonely.

Rudolph: There's more at stake here than the lives of two men. This involves national security.

AMANDA: I don’t care about national security, all I know is, I don't want him to die.

LEE: Look, I'm sorry I got you mixed up in all this mess.

AMANDA: Oh, that's all right. Look, how often does a suburban lady like me get to drink vodka with the KGB and eat beans on Christmas.
