A LOVELY LITTLE AFFAIR

Meanwhile, in
Outside, Lee
turns up just as a guy arrives to deliver some pizza. Lee pretends to be
Amanda's husband and pays for the food then knocks on her door. Amanda answers
and is surprised to see Lee. She quickly shuts the door behind her so that her
family can't see or hear anything. Lee explains that he'd been trying to call
her on the phone and Amanda tells him that Phillip is talking to his new
girlfriend.
She asks what
he wants and Lee says that he needs a favour for
which she'll be paid. Apparently, the Agency Oversight Committee who authorise the Agency's budget's,
etc, are to begin their review the next day and they'll be going through
everyone's expense accounts. Amanda realises that Lee
wants her to make sense of his and he concurs. She tells him that she's in the
next morning anway as Billy had already asked her to
go in so she'll take a look then.
The next day
at the
Elsewhere, Lee
arrives at the Agency and speaks to Francine about the latest information that
has been sent through. Apparently, a group of terrorists, known as Red
February, were involved in the kidnapping of the young woman in
A knock at the
door announces Amanda's arrival and when she enters, Billy hands her a light
surveillance assignment - it's Alan Chamberlain. Francine explains that they
have to validate it whenever he returns to the
Across town in
the dingy Hotel Bixby, the kidnapped girl calls out for Alan. One of the Red
February terrorists picks up a phone and dials a number. Alan Chamberlain
answers and they inform him that they have his sister, Sophia, and her life depends upon him co-operating. Chamberlain is told to be at
the Capitol Rose Garden at three o'clock that afternoon and he'll be contacted
there.
Chamberlain
does as he's told and Lee and Amanda catch up with him at the garden. Lee tells
Amanda to tail Chamberlain and take photo's of everyone he talks to - but to
make sure she keeps her distance and then drop the
film off to the Agency that night. Amanda listens absently to Lee's
instructions, her focus more on Chamberlain which Lee notices and doesn't
particularly like. Oblivious to Lee's less than happy demeanour,
Amanda begins her assignment.
Lee goes back
to the Agency and Francine tells him that they've received a wire from MI6
saying that Red February had left
Meanwhile,
Amanda follows Chamberlain around the garden and watches him sit on a bench. As
he sits there, two priests stroll up and stand just behind him. They are the two
Red February goons and as they quietly talk to each other, one of them surrepticiously holds out a tiny tape player that relays a
message to Chamberlain.
Unaware of
what's happening, Amanda takes a photo while the message tells Chamberlain that
his sister is fine for now. It then asks for him to nod if he has made the
arrangements they asked. He does and the message tells him to go to the nearby phonebooth and when it rings, to just listen. He gets up
and goes to the booth. Amanda follows him and notices the priests then sees
Chamberlain run to the phone when it rings. The priests walk by and Chamberlain
picks up the phone only to hear his sister asking for help before being cut
off. Chamberlain yells down the phone then puts it down and chases after the priests
who quickly get into a van parked nearby which then speeds off.
Chamberlain
stares after the van then dejectedly turns back towards the garden. Fearing
he'll see her watching him, Amanda also quickly turns around and nearly gets
hit by a kid on a skateboard. Chamberlain sees that she drops her bag and
camera and runs to her aide. They chat and he assumes she's a tourist so she
goes along with it then they say goodbye. Amanda walks away but then
Chamberlain catches her up and asks if they could take a walk and talk some
more. Amanda suggests a coffee and he agrees.
At the Agency,
they play the airport surveillance tape and Francine picks out Franco Necci who's a known member of Red February. They've yet to
identify the girl but are working on it. Just then, Billy walks in with Faber
and the committee and calls over Lee and Francine then introduces them. Faber knows all about him as his name has
come to her attention far too often.
Billy orders Lee to leave the Necci case and
help Faber, who wants to check over his case reports – starting with his first
day of employment.
Elsewhere, Amanda
and Chamberlain chat over coffee and she tells him she’s a dental hygienist. When she says she has to go, Chamberlain asks
her out for dinner. Amanda declines and
leaves then heads back to the Agency.
She interrupts Lee and Faber and Lee takes her into Billy’s office where
she tells him she’s accidentally made contact.
Lee says that’s perfect and to do to dinner with him. Lee then asks if Chamberlain is as boring as
he looks and Amanda, guessing he’s jealous, says that Chamberlain is ‘dull as a
stick’. Lee grins, says ‘good’ then goes
back to deal with Faber.
hat evening, Amanda meets
Chamberlain for dinner and afterwards they go for a walk and Chamberlain kisses
her little knowing that they’re being watched by Necci.
Back at the
Agency, the photo’s Amanda has taken have been developed and Lee recognizes Necci. Worried, he
snubs Faber and heads over to Amanda’s house.
Amanda arrives
home and Dotty wants to know how the evening went. Amanda says it was good and tells her that
they’re meeting for breakfast. She then
goes to bed but is soon woken up by Lee knocking on her bedroom window. She lets him in and he asks about
Chamberlain. She says that nothing out
of the ordinary happened and Lee tells her that the Agency will take over now
as it appears he’s involved with Necci. Amanda persuades Lee to bring Francine the
next morning and sit at another table to keep an eye on them. He reluctantly agrees and they shake hands –
which is when they both realise that he’s sitting on
her bed while she’s in her nightdress!
They get through the ‘moment’ with some awkwardness and then Lee leaves.
The next
morning, Necci is visiting Chamberlain in his room. He wants Chamberlain to do the job for them
that day and also quizzes him about Amanda.
Chamberlain says he’s told her nothing but Necci
isn’t happy and says that if she’s an agent he will kill her.
At the Agency,
information has come in on the identity of the girl – it’s
Alan Chamberlain’s half-sister, Sophia.
They know they can’t now pick him up with Sophia being held hostage.
Meanwhile,
Amanda is getting ready but Chamberlain calls her under duress from Necci and cancels their breakfast date. She tries to call Lee but he’s already left.
In Chamberlain’s
room, a forged document is being aged and he tells Necci
that it’ll be another hour. Necci isn’t happy and pulls out a gun telling him that he’ll
be watched at all times. Chamberlain
goes down to breakfast and Lee and Francine are seated at another table. Necci is posing as
a waiter. Suddenly, Amanda arrives and
sits down at Chamberlain’s table saying that perhaps they can talk. Chamberlain sees Necci
heading towards them and he grabs Amanda and they run off to her car. He tells her stay away from him and then runs
off. Lee and Francine hold Necci up and then Lee makes his way over to Amanda to find
out where he went. He then tells Amanda
that Necci has his half-sister and is holding her for
ransom.

National Archives, Chamberlain has arrived and begins ‘treating’ the Declaration

and realizes it’s the Declaration of
Later, back at
the Agency, Lee comments how the case involving Chamberlain was based on
pure accident when it should’ve taken technique. He then goes on to demonstrate to Amanda how
to make a casual contact and get him to ask her to a Verdi concert at the
Kennedy. She resists his ‘charms’ at
first but when she realizes the tickets are real immediately accepts!

ROMANCE
The romance
aspect of Lee and Amanda gains more momentum this season and Lee's obvious
jealousy during this episode is a nice start of things to come. One nice moment
is when Amanda first sees a picture of Alan Chamberlain and makes a little
appreciative exclamation at his looks. Lee realises
that she finds Chamberlain attractive and doesn't look at all happy about it -
not that he's prepared to say anything, mind you! His suspicions are further
confirmed when he goes with Amanda so she can begin her tail and he finds
her attention not on him but on Chamberlain.
At that point
I think he's mainly miffed that Amanda's interested in someone else other than
him - they're not going to meet so there's no real threat…yet.
When Amanda
comes back after accidentally making contact with Chamberlain, Lee wants to
know if he’s boring or not and Amanda, suspecting he’s jealous, tells him that he
is. Her theory is proved right when Lee
grins and says ‘good’ before leaving the room.
She knows that he likes her but also knows that he’ll not be admitting anything
soon.
Of course, one
of the nicest scene’s is when Lee is in Amanda’s
bedroom and they shake hands. It starts
off as a friendly gesture but a moment is shared when Lee seems to realise that Amanda is in her nightdress and how intimate
they are. Amanda also realizes and
covers herself up a little before they again make light conversation to gloss
over the awkward but sweet moment.
Lastly, one of
the funniest, sweetest moments happens at the end of the episode when Lee
demonstrates his own unique way of making a ‘casual and natural’ contact with
Amanda and asks her out on a date to a Verdi concert at the Kennedy. His playful side out in full force, Lee gets
the date he wants when Amanda realizes the tickets he’s holding are real but the
rapport between the two as they muck around is fun to see.
QUOTES
DOTTY: That's
what we need around here. Someone who's handsome, who can fix
the sink and barbecue and has his own hair.
AMANDA: Oh
mother, out of the woodwork. He will just come out of the woodwork.
AMANDA: I
could've been my mother!
LEE: Mmm, you two do have a lot in common but I wouldn't go that
far.
LEE: I paid
the kid a twenty for the pizza.
AMANDA: Oh!
You gave him too much.
FRANCINE:
You'd better wear your little tennis shoes, dear, because Chamberlain travels
in a little faster circle than you're used to.
AMANDA: Thank
you so much, Francine.
FRANCINE:
Anytime.
AMANDA: (looking at
Chamberlain) I
wonder if that's his own hair.
LEE: Just
don't get close enough to find out.
LEE: Is he as
stuffy as he looks? You know, head in the clouds, artistic type.
AMANDA (trying not to
smile):
Dull as a stick.
LEE: (pleased): Good.
FABER: Wait a
minute Mr. Stetson. What about the ladies underwear?
LEE: Look
lady, a good friend of mine is getting too close to some pretty scary people
and she doesn't know it so we'll just have to take care of your underwear
problem later.
LEE: It was
all hinged on an accident Amanda. Now a professional trained agent plans every
detail, every nuance. The word accident does not enter into his vocabulary.
AMANDA: Well
heaven forbid, one tiny little compliment should escape your lips.
LEE: Hey
Toots.
AMANDA: Aagh.
LEE: How ya' doin'? Heard any good opera
lately?
AMANDA: No, I
can't say that I have.
LEE: Well,
what do you say we hit the Kennedy for a little Verdi.
AMANDA: Sorry,
I'm busy.
LEE: Oh Gee.
That's too bad (produces tickets). These were for tonight.
AMANDA: Are
those real?
LEE: About
eight?
AMANDA: Love
to.
LEE: See how
easy that was?
