Marcus
Cole - Resident Ranger on Babylon 5 from 2260 until the end of 2261. The
Rangers were the Human-Minbari group that acted as intelligence gatherers
for the Army of Light.
Marcus
joined the Rangers when his brother William (also a Ranger) died in his arms.
Marcus had failed to heed his brother's warning against the Shadow attack and
they eventually wiped out the rest of his family and colony on Arisia where he
lived. Since then, his sense of guilt over his brother and the death of his
parents made him volunteer for all kinds of high risk missions as though only
death would bring him peace.
Once
on Babylon 5 he's soon a part of the war council and keeps the command staff
and Delenn up to date on what's happening outside the station. He becomes good
friends with Dr. Franklin and also falls in love with Commander Susan Ivanova.
Unfortunately, he never actually tells her how he feels but when she is
mortally wounded in a fight against Earth, he uses an alien device to transfer
his lifeforce to her thus killing himself in the process. His body is put in a
cryo unit by order of Ivanova and there he stays until someone can find a way
to bring him back.
It
was a sad, tragic end to the character but Marcus didn't want to lose anymore
people that he loved and so he made the ultimate sacrifice.
I
first saw him referred to as a Knight on Ali Bowden's site Knight of Light and I must say
that it is an excellent description of a character that was as brave and as
honourable as the Knights of King Arthur.
