THE MOLE

After a third 'busted play' to capture a Bulgarian spy called Viktor, Lee is contacted by the Agency's head man, 'Blue Leader'. He suspects that there is a 'mole' (traitor) at the Agency and as Lee wasn't a part of the first two failures, Blue Leader wants him to find out who it is. Lee isn't happy at being selected for this job but can't decline.

The next day, Lee is in the local bar, Nedlinger's, with Francine, Ronnie and David Benson, who were all members of his team that failed to catch Viktor the day before. Francine makes an excuse as to why she missed a meeting that morning, about the previous evenings failed assignment, saying that she had to take some cables from Cuba up to Crypto. No-one believes her and Lee tells them all to go away as he's had enough talking about the mission.

They move to another table, leaving him alone and then Amanda walks into the bar. She goes over to him and tells him she has a roll of film that he left in her car when he used it for a previous surveillance case. Lee tells her that it's just a test roll and she gets embarrassed.

Benson walks up behind Lee and then proceeds to chat Amanda up and ask her out to dinner much to Lee's chagrin.

Later that day, back at the Agency, Billy is chewing them all out about the Viktor operation and demands reports dating back to 1981. He gives them until Friday to complete them. As they begin to leave the briefing room, Billy holds Lee back and tells him he wants his on Wednesday as he's new to the case and may have a different slant on things. Lee doesn't think he'll be able to do it that quickly so Billy tells him to ask Amanda to help type it up.

Lee meets with Amanda and asks her to type up the report for him. She agrees and he tells her about Blue Leader and that there's a mole in the Agency. Remembering that she's got a date with Benson, Amanda asks Lee if she should cancel it. Lee gets jealous and they end up rowing about it until Amanda says that she will see him as she can talk to him and find out a few things. Lee reluctantly agrees with her reasoning and they leave.

That evening, Amanda meets up with Benson who takes her to a fancy party in his new sports car. Amanda comments on it but he says that he got it just after his divorce. As the evening wears on, they talk and he tells Amanda that being an agent you learn to live on the 'cheap'.

The next day, Amanda arrives at the Agency with agents bank statements for Lee to have a look at. He checks Ronny's and finds that there's been a single deposit of forty thousand dollars made into his account. Lee decides to speak to Ronny about it but it's too late as he's been murdered.

That evening, Lee, Francine, Benson and an older agent called Reilly are sitting around and drinking coffee at the Agency as they discuss Ronny's death. Accusations start to fly as Benson is upset because Ronny was his partner. They calm down and then Benson leaves, followed soon after by Francine who claims that she wasn't making an excuse about the cables she got landed to deal with - unfortunately, this time she says it was for the Rio office instead of the Cuba one which she claimed it was before.

Once alone, Reilly mentions Francine's slip to Lee who had already picked up on it. Reilly asks him outright if Blue Leader has got him to investigate the others but Lee skirts around the issue and doesn't answer him.

The next day, Lee asks Billy about the calls he's been making at a nearby payphone outside of the Agency. Billy tells him that he's been trying to find out what's happening on the Viktor case and that he's been phoning his internal 'upstairs' contacts. They stop talking when Francine appears at the door and she accuses them of talking about her and starts to cry as she says that no-one trusts her anymore. She then tells Lee he has a phone call and leaves.

The call is from Amanda and Lee meets her at her boys Little League game where she's helping out at the snack stand. Amanda tells Lee that while checking through Benson's accounts, she noticed that he paid alimony for a few months and then stopped but he still continued to claim full tax credit for the entire amount. Lee realises that this means he must be paying by cash…so just where is he getting that cash from?

Lee obtains for Amanda an ID card and gets her to pose as a person from the US Census department and visit Benson's ex-wife.

Meanwhile, Benson is meeting with Viktor. It becomes clear that he is the traitor and that he got Viktor to kill Ronny for him. However, now that the net is tightening on him, Benson wants Lee taken care of too but Viktor refuses saying that he's become too expensive even for them and that Benson must get rid of Lee himself.

Back at Nedlinger's Francine explains why she lost control…her mother had major surgery and she felt guilty for not being with her. Lee is comforting and when Benson joins them, Francine leaves.

Benson tries to get Lee to admit he's doing the internal investigation but Lee refuses to talk. Benson subtly pulls a gun on Lee and makes him leave Nedlinger's via the back door where he has a car waiting.

Amanda enters Nedlinger's looking for Lee and the barman tells her that he's literally just left with Benson. She goes outside just in time to see the two men drive away. She gets into her own car and follows them for a distance until she remembers that the next county, which they're approaching, has strict speeding laws. She guns her car and overtakes Lee as they enter Fairfax County. Only Lee recognises her car and he's confused at her tactics until Benson comments on how it's well known locally that you shouldn't speed through Fairfax.

Amanda passes two policemen who are attending a pretty young woman that has a flat tyre. They takes no notice of Amanda's speeding and so she turns back and performs a very dusty U-turn right in front of them. This gets their attention and they chase after her.

Lee continues to drive and they pass Amanda who's now been pulled up by the two policemen. Benson tells Lee to turn off just down the road. Lee continues to try and convince Benson to give himself up but Benson tells Lee that he's going to fly to Paris at four o'clock with Viktor.

They stop then get out of the car just as Amanda appears in her station wagon. She drives up to them and smashes into the open door of Lee's car. Lee sees his chance and fights with Benson. Lee wins just as the policemen turn up and hands Benson over after clarifying that the Paris flight is for real.

Lee then asks Amanda how she got the police to follow her and she tells them that she showed them her government ID. Lee is confused but then Amanda shows him her Census ID and he smiles.

The next day, Lee and Amanda are driving down the road discussing the damage to Amanda's car. Lee promises that her station wagon will be repaired in three days and that she can have an Agency loaner until then. As they talk, Blue Leader's voice comes out of the radio and thanks them both for their hard work on the case. Amanda then tries to ask Blue Leader about her car but he cuts her off much to Lee's amusement.

SCENE'S TO WATCH OUT FOR

Amanda joining Lee and Nedlinger's and handing him the roll of film, thinking it was important. It's funny because he doesn't have a clue what she's on about and she is whispering in an attempt to be covert.

Benson putting the moves on Amanda in front of Lee who says all of Benson's lines before him because he's heard them so often.

Anytime Lee denies that there's anything between Amanda and himself during the episode.

Lee and Amanda rowing over Benson in the Smithsonian Museum.

Amanda trying to get Lee to wear a Bombers baseball cap so he looks like just another father and when he refuses she asks him to loosen his tie as he looks, 'a little stuffy'.

ROMANCE

Lee does a pretty good job of being jealous and then denying it furiously during this episode. Poor Amanda doesn't know if she's coming or going half the time. The highlight of his jealousy is their argument over Benson when they're in a Smithsonian Museum. Lee tells her Benson has 'more scalps on his belt than Geronimo' - a definate case of pot calling the kettle black, not to mention that fact that he leads the exact same lifestlye at this point!

Another thing Lee does, is keep telling Amanda how they're relationship is 'strictly business' and nothing more. Amanda is surprisingly agreeable on this point but Lee keeps reiterating it anyway.

Amanda, in turn, seems to feel almost guilty about dating Benson and wants Lee's approval that she should go out with him. It even comes across as though she wants Lee to say no, but when he doesn't she decides to date Benson as more of a payback rather than because she actually likes the guy.

So, another episode where you see the chemistry between them flare a little higher - their arguments certainly showed more effectively their feelings towards each other in these early days than anything else.

QUOTES

BENSON: Mrs. King, I do believe? David Benson, your eternal servant.

AMANDA: Hello. You have a very good memory.

LEE (under his breath): No, just great taste.

BENSON: No, just great taste.

LEE: Uh, Davey, isn't your ice melting over there?

BENSON: Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know you two had anything personal going on…

LEE: Hold it, hold it, there's nothing personal between Amanda and me.

AMANDA: That's right, it's, uh, business, just business.

AMANDA: I have a date with a suspect. How am I going to get out of it?

LEE: Well, uh…are you sure you want to?

AMANDA: What?

LEE: I thought you bought that line of his all the way.

AMANDA: He asked me to lunch, it was a simple lunch invitation, that's all it was, and you're making it sound like it…

LEE: Hey, hey, hey. You want to go out with a guy that's got more scalps on his belt than Geronimo, you be my guest.

AMANDA: If you didn't want me to go, all you had to do was say, "No, don't go."

LEE: Oh sure, oh sure, and sound like I was jea…

AMANDA: Well, what should I do?

LEE: Hey, it's your own personal time.

AMANDA: Is it a yes or a no?

AMANDA: I'm going on a date with David Benson.

LEE: Terrific!

AMANDA: Yeah. Right.

LEE: Terrific.

AMANDA: Good, I'm happy.

LEE: Fine.

AMANDA: I'll see you tomorrow.

LEE: Good. But it was your decision.

LEE: Walter, you are a patriot, simple as that. If you have taught me one thing, it's loyalty to this agency. Sorry, Humbug. As a mole, you just wouldn't cut it.

REILLY: Think you're pretty smart, don't you, Scarecrow? (To himself) I taught him too damn well.

AMANDA: Here, look, would you mind putting this on, then?

LEE: It's a baseball cap.

AMANDA: Yes, I know it's a baseball cap. Most of the Bomber fathers wear them.

LEE: Bombers fathers? No! Amanda, I am sorry, I pass. I am not, nor do I ever intend to be a Bomber father.

AMANDA: All right, well, do you think you could maybe just loosen your tie a little bit, then, please, you look a little stuffy.

BENSON: Cool. Very cool. Not a blink, a twitch. Zero reaction, the perfect secret agent. You're a real credit to your country flag, you know?

LEE: Oh, you too, David. Now, which country did you say that was again?

LEE: I have to do everything. Leave my coffee, drive the car…get shot.

AMANDA: And the Agency will pay for the damage, right? Because, I mean, it's entirely practically the whole side of my station wagon is really messed up.

LEE: The Agency will pay. No problem.

AMANDA: No problem?

LEE: Yeah.

AMANDA: I can't get them to pay for the pair of blue shoes that I ruined, and that was a lot less expensive.
