Phoebe Bouffay is a self-employed masseuse and she also sings at Central Perk. She writes her own songs and they tend to be weird and depressing. She has a twin sister called, Ursula who she doesn't get on with at all. She spent most of her childhood and teenage years living on the streets and getting mixed up with various colourful character's until finally rooming with
Monica. Unfortunately, when Monica's obsessive cleaning habits became to much for her to endure, she moved out in order to save their friendship. Phoebe then stayed with her grandmother who sadly passed away shortly afterwards.She never knew her father and her mother killed herself when Phoebe was very young. She has since been reunited with her father and has also found out that the woman she always thought was her mum was actually not. Her real mother is still alive and living in a beach house in Montauk.
She also found out that she had a half-brother called, Frank Jr. She met up with him and they became close. So close, that when Frank met an older woman, Alice, and decided to get married, Phoebe agreed to be a surrogate mum for them as Alice was unable to have children herself.
Her love life is pretty much like her - unusual. She fell in love with and married a guy she thought was gay to help him out. When they got divorced though, she was very upset to learn that he was, in fact, straight and in love with another woman.
After giving birth to Frank and Alice's triplets, she met a policeman called, Gary and after a while they moved in together. She lasted one night in the apartment and then broke up with him the following morning when he shot a bird singing outside.
Her most meaningful relationship was with a scientist called, David. She was very much in love but they split up when he got a grant to work in Minsk with his partner, Max. He would have stayed but she made him go, not wanting him to miss out on the fantastic opportunity. He visited again recently and they spent a few hours together before he had to return to Minsk.
Although flaky, Phoebe isn't stupid, she just doesn't always seem to be on the same planet as…well…anybody else, really. She has her own unique way of looking at things and doesn't always know when to keep quiet - she has let more than a few secrets out in her time.
She's believes in fate, psychic's and reincarnation but not evolution much to
Ross' chagrin. Her friends are her life although, she doesn't really appear to have a 'best friend' out of the group, like the others do. She's extremely independent and is not afraid to stand up for herself or her friends.Over the years, she has developed a light, flirty and teasing relationship with
Joey and there are hints that she and him could become closer in the future.
