PRIDE AND PREJUDICE CONT…D

Into the relative calm of Meryton comes a wealthy young gentleman called Mr. Bingley who rents a local large house called Netherfield. He brings with him his two sisters, one of whom is married, and his good friend Mr. Darcy who is even wealthier than Bingley.

Bingley and Darcy deciding on whether to rent Netherfield

They settle in and are soon invited to the local ball. They attend, but it's soon clear that Caroline Bingley, her sister and husband and Mr. Darcy aren't quite happy at mixing with middle-class people. Bingley, however, spies Jane Bennet and is immediately smitten. He dances with her and introduces her to his sisters which is a great honour.

Seeing that Darcy isn't looking happy, Bingley suggests that he ask someone to dance. Darcy refuses saying that Bingley has the attention of the only pretty lady there. Bingley agrees and then spots Lizzie sitting not very far away from them and tells Darcy to ask her to dance. Not wanting to take second best, Darcy tells Bingley that he isn't interested in a woman that's 'slighted by other men' and that she's not 'handsome enough' to tempt him.

Unfortunately, little do the men realise but Lizzie has overheard their conversation and decides that she doesn't like Mr. Darcy one bit.

Lizzie overhears their conversation about her.

Darcy stares after Lizzie when she walks by…despite what he said, he's actually interested in her.
