THE REUNION
"Alright, hurry up and go get ready! We don't want to be late." Lee flashed Amanda a smile as she turned and went back inside the house.
Amanda hurried up the stairs to her bedroom. "Mother! I've changed my mind, I think I'll go to the reunion."
Dotty entered the room. "What made you change your mind? You seemed so set on not going a few minutes ago..."
"Oh, I just thought about all the fun I'd be missing out on, and it would be nice to see all the people I used to know and see how they've changed." Amanda walked into the bathroom and closed the door so that she could get changed. She emerged a few minutes later fully clad in a 60's outfit. Dotty was standing right outside the door.
"Sometimes I just can't figure you out, Amanda. One minute your mind is set one way, and the next you've completely changed your mind."
"Mother, I really have to get going!" Amanda hurried down the stairs and towards the back door where she'd left Lee. She started to open the door.
"Amanda, why are you going out the back door, the car is parked in front?"
Amanda quickly closed the door. "You're absolutely right mother, how could I have forgotten?" Amanda flashed Lee a look telling him to sneak around to the front. Amanda headed towards the front door. "Goodbye, Mother."
"Goodbye dear." Amanda was already out the door.
"Are the keys in the car? I'm driving."
"Yes, they're in the car."
Lee opened the passenger door for Amanda and she got in. He walked around and got in the driver's seat. Lee started up the car and headed off down the road.
"I would have much rather taken my car...."
"We couldn't take your car because then my car would still be sitting there. And if mother had noticed, then she'd think I'd lied to her and went out on a date or something instead of to the reunion. She's suspicious enough as it is at the fact that I wasn't going to go and then changed my mind."
"Oh."
"I don't feel right about lieing to all of these people about us being together."
"Amanda, why would you not feel right?"
"Its just, these people used to be my friends. Well, some of them anyway. It just doesn't feel right."
"Think of it as any other case. We've had to pose as being engaged and as being married before. You never had any problem then. Besides, aren't there at least a few people you'd like to make jealous of you? And what better way than for us to go as a couple? Lots of girls will be jealous if you've got a handsome guy like me!" Lee flashed Amanda a smirk. She glared back at him.
"Actually, I can think of one girl that I'd like to make extremely jealous; Meredith Baxter."
They pulled into a parking space. Lee turned off the car and got out. He walked around to the passenger side and opened the door for Amanda. Then he reached for her hand, and they started walking towards the building. Lee watched Amanda out of the corner of his eye. I'll do my best to make everyone jealous of you. I'll act like we're very much in love. You deserve to have everyone jealous of you. Maybe I won't have to act very hard...Amanda caught Lee's look, and he quickly looked straight ahead. She wondered what he was thinking. Especially lately he'd gotten lost in thought. I can't believe he actually insisted on taking me to this reunion. I wonder how he found out. I didn't tell him about it. I'm starting to discover new sides to him. I've known the agent side to him, and I thought I knew the personal side to him too. But lately he's been opening up more. Its like he's reaching out to someone. Like he's reaching out to....
Amanda's thoughts were interrupted by a tall, thin blonde calling her name. She'd been so lost in thought she hadn't noticed they'd already walked inside. Amanda recognized the girl. She leaned towards Lee and whispered to him, "That's Meredith Baxter."
"Amanda! I wasn't sure you'd come. And who is this handsome man you're with?"
"Hi. I'm Lee Stimpson, Amanda's...fiancee." Lee caught Amanda's glare as he said it. Meredith immediately backed off a little bit. Lee knew he should have never said he was Amanda's fiancee. He didn't know what had come over him. Not too long ago, I would have been checking out that woman and wondering how I could get her back to my place. Now, all I wanted to do was make her as jealous as possible because I knew how much Amanda disliked her. Amanda....
Amanda and Meredith were talking. "We'll have to talk more later. For now I want to go catch up with everyone." Meredith walked off.
Amanda gave Lee a smack in the side and glared at him. "I can't believe you said we're engaged! What were you thinking? Dating would have been one thing, friend's would have the truth. But engaged?!"
Lee felt a little hurt, but he didn't show it. "Don't worry, no one will ever find out the truth." He gave Amanda a big smile. She couldn't say anything to that smile. Anytime he flashed it at her she felt as if she could follow him to the end of the world. "Would you care to dance?"
"I guess so. Its been quite some time since I've danced."
Lee led Amanda towards the dance floor. A slow song was playing. They started dancing. Lee's arms felt tight and strong around Amanda. She let herself move even closer to him, and rested her head on his chest. She closed her eyes.
I've never felt like this. Dancing with her feels so right. Everything with her feels so right. I could dance with her like this forever.
The music went on for a while, and then stopped. Amanda took a small step back. She looked up at Lee, to find him staring at her. Their eyes met; this time Lee didn't look away. They stood like that for a while. Then Lee seemed to pull away.
"Let's get something to eat." His voice cracked as he talked.
LATER ON THAT NIGHT
"Meredith told me you were engaged! I had to come over and meet the man that you were settling for."
Lee shook the man's hand. "The name's Dan. Amanda probably never told you anything about me. We dated a little bit our junior year."
Lee flashed Amanda a quick look, and then resumed talking to Dan. Amanda didn't really pay attention to what they were saying. Finally Dan walked off.
"If one more person comes up to us about the fact that we're engaged, or should I say about the fact that you lied and said we were engaged, I'm going to scream. Its got to be getting late anyway."
Lee checked his watch. "Its 12:13. Do you want to head home?"
Amanda nodded. They walked back to the car silently. No one said anything as they drove towards Amanda's house. Both of them were lost in thought.
Lee pulled the car into the driveway and shut off the engine. He got out and walked over to the passenger side. He opened the door and helped Amanda out. The two walked towards the back door silently.
"Thank you for coming over and making me go. I had a fun time."
"Yeah, except for me saying we were engaged. I shouldn't have done that. I know how you feel about things like that."
"Its ok, I couldn't be mad after the way Meredith reacted." They both laughed.
"Well...I guess its good night." Lee looked into Amanda's eyes. They stood there for a minute.
This time it was Amanda who pulled away. As she walked through the back door into her house, she said, "Goodnight Lee."
Lee turned slowly and walked towards his car, which was parked a little ways from the house. He stopped at the car and turned and stared at the house. Then he got into the car and sped off.
Amanda watched him drive away from the window.
