Professor Arthur Summerlee (Michael Sinelnikoff) joined the expedition at the request of the Zoological Society in London. He is a skeptic of Professor Challenger's work and doesn't particularly like the man.

A kindly man, Summerlee carries the guilt of not being present when his wife died a few years earlier. Since Challenger thinks only of himself, the elderly Professor acts as surrogate father to both Veronica and Marguerite once they get stranded.

He has a vast knowledge of botany and medicine and is very interested in Veronica's knowledge of various medicinal plants that grow on the plateau, tending to the other members of the group if they get hurt. He's also very domesticated and is the one who usually prepares the food.

Over the year he is present in the treehouse, he develops a liking and mutual respect for Challenger and becomes friends with the other explorer's.

However, while trying to leave the plateau by balloon, the explorer's are shot down and come into contact with an evil man called, Drakul who leads a band of raiders. The group eventually have a confrontation with the raiders on a rope bridge spanning high above a river.

Summerlee is struck by an arrow in the stomach and falls over the edge of the cliff into the raging water below. His body is never found and they are told by a plateau dweller called, Tribune, that the river leads to falls that supposedly go off the plateau.

Two years on, he is still mentioned by the rest of the explorer's and there are indications that he may still be alive somewhere in the 'Lost World'.
