THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN'

After opening
a can of coffee, Amanda wins a holiday in Munich and goes there with her mother
and her boys. A couple of days into their break, whilst out watching the
'Glockenspiel', Amanda suddenly glimpses Lee. He disappears into the crowd,
however and she then goes shopping with her family.
As they are
going back to their hotel, Amanda stops to look into a café window and the rest
of her family carry on walking. As she hurries to catch them up, she passes by
an alleyway where, suddenly, an arm reaches out and grabs her. It's Lee. He
tells her to meet him at the 'Angel of Peace' in one hour and bring a camera as
if she's just a tourist. While she checks her guidebook to find the location,
Lee does his usual vanishing trick leaving Amanda standing there alone.
An hour later,
Amanda waits as instructed and Lee soon joins her at the statue. He tells her
she's needed for 'one simple assignment' but Amanda apologises then explains
about the contest and that she's on holiday with her family so can't help him.
Lee informs
her that the contest was rigged by Billy for the sole purpose of using her for
the assignment. Amanda is upset and thinks that they should trust her by now,
but Lee says that what they did was better as it didn't look suspicious. Amanda
accepts this, then Lee tells her that she'll be contacted by Haddie Kemp, a
60's student radical, who will give her a message and then she has to pass it
on to Lee. He goes on to explain that although Kemp has been in Europe for the
past fifteen years, he's still on the wanted list in the States for his
association with terrorist group, Rebaddon. He won't be arrested though because
it was Kemp himself that contacted the Agency and in return for getting him out
he'll give them info on the terrorists.
That evening,
Amanda goes to the Biergarden to meet Kemp. Lee is there and hands Amanda a key
which unlocks a door to a stein collection and that the code on it refers to a
certain mug she must use in order for Kemp to recognise her as the contact.
Elsewhere in
Munich at the stately home of Baron Klaus van Eiger, he and two other members
of the Rebaddon group, a woman called Inga and a man called Otis, discuss Kemp.
Inga and Otis believe that Kemp is a problem but the Baron dismisses their
worries saying that Kemp will murder an American as planned and then he will
kill Kemp.
Back at the
Bierhaus, Amanda goes and retrieves the stein from the cabinet. On her way back
she accidentally spills some beer on Lee and he tells her to go and sit down.
She does and is soon joined by Kemp. He tells her that the Agency has to get
him out before he's forced to kill someone. Rebaddon have drawn up a list of
prominent American's and he's been nominated to make the first kill. The problem
is he doesn't know who it will be as they won't tell him until just before it's
time so that he can't warn anyone. The only information he has is that it's in
48 hours time before night falls.
He then tells
her that one of the main reason's he wants to return is that he's found out
that he has a seven year old son by a woman he met in Munich. She recently died
in a car crash and he now wants to be with his boy. Amanda is sympathetic and
promises to pass on his information. Kemp then notices Inga and Otis enter the
bierhaus and tells Amanda to meet him the next day at St. George's Church at
10am. As she checks through her guidebook, Kemp leaves to go and greet Otis and
Inga and when she looks up, it's to find, naturally, that he's gone. Returning
to her book, she fails to notice Inga staring at her from across the room.
The next day,
Amanda meets Lee and she relays what Kemp told her. They arrange to meet again
in two hours and this time Billy and Francine are present. Billy orders Lee to
take care of Inga and Otis, then tells Francine to to make a list of all
prominent Americans in Munich.
Amanda then
goes to the church and meets Kemp. She tells him that the Agency will take him
out by army transport the following day. Kemp agrees and they decide on a time
of 10am before he quietly leaves without her knowing.
Lee, disguised
as a priest, then approaches Amanda and she tells him of the agreed time. She
then leaves and starts walking back to her hotel. Onga and Otis sit in a car as
she walks by and, upon recognising her, Inga decides to kill her. After a
failed attempt to run her over, Inga drives off and the baron then drives up,
acting like a concerned passer-by. He takes her to the hotel, then invites her
to a 'soiree' he's giving that evening. Amanda is non-commital and he leaves.
She enters her hotel but Lee is there and brings her straight back out again
and they discuss the baron before he takes her to meet up with Billy and
Francine.
Meanwhile, the
baron is ridiculing Otis and Inga for trying to kill Amanda. He then orders
them to find Kemp or he'll kill them instead.
Back with Lee
and Amanda, Billy and Francine explain that retired symphony conductor, Matthew
Hearns, will be attending a party that evening. Since he is now a goodwill
ambassador for the US he's a prime target. Other potential victims are the
President's Aide, Randolph Benton and noted playwright, Jason Styron. Billy
orders Lee and Amanda to go to the baron's party and cover Hearns while he takes
Benton leaving Styron to Francine.
Borrowing
Francine's clothes for the evening, Amanda attends the party with Lee whom she
introduces to the baron. Circulating, they spot Hearns and make contact,
finding out that he's making a speech by the Glockenspiel the next day. Hearns
then leaves and Lee tells Amanda to circulate some more while he takes a look
around.
He goes up a
back stairway and is caught by Otis and Inga, that latter knocking him out with
a gun. She then tells Otis to get Amanda.
The next morning,
Lee and Amanda are tied up and sitting on chairs, back to back with Otis
guarding them. The baron enters, followed by Inga, who tells him they've found
Kemp. They leave and Lee then tries to escape. Seeing a pedestal with a vase on
top, he gets Amanda to shuffle the chairs over to it. Using their heads, they
manage to tip the pedestal far enough forward that the vase falls off and
smashes on the floor. Lee then tells Amanda to prepare herself as he's going to
topple them both over. He does so and then picks up a piece of ceramic and cuts
through the ropes.
Now free, they
leave the mansion and take a taxi to where Kemp is waiting to be picked up at a
crowded café. While there, Inga and Otis arrive. Lee spies Kemp and warns him
that Rebaddon know he's there and they need to leave quickly. Inga and Otis
start shooting at them and he and Lee take off with Otis in pursuit. Inga goes
in the opposite direction with the hopes of cutting them off and Amanda runs
and hides behind a dumpster. The bin suddenly starts rolling and Amanda has to
let go. It continues to roll and runs straight into Inga, knocking her out.
Billy and the
police then turn up and go to help Lee and Kemp. Otis sees them and runs away,
jumping on a motorbike to make his escape. Lee also jumps on a bike and gives
chase. The police arrested Inga and Lee finally catches up with Otis and, after
a fight, the police turn up and arrest him too. Lee goes back to the café and
Kemp explains that the baron was the back-up assassin and that he's convinced Hearns
is the target even though he's meant to be killed at night fall and Hearns
leaves just after midday.
Amanda
suddenly realises that night fall is actually when the 'knight' falls on the
Glockenspiel! Lee immediately turns to go and, after a brief argument where
Amanda points out that her family are going to be there, he reluctantly lets
her join him. He jumps back on his bike and with Amanda riding pinion, they
head off for Munich.
At the
Glockenspiel, Hearns is preparing to make his speech after the clock has
stopped. A crowd, including Dotty and the boys, are gathered to watch when Lee
and Amanda arrive. Amanda spots the baron on a balcony, holding a cane that
doubles as a gun. Lee climbs up and grabs the baron just as the knight falls on
the Glockenspiel. They have a tussle then the police take the baron away. Lee
then goes back to Amanda and asks if she's seen her family. She points them out
and when Lee turns to look, Amanda slips away. He turns back to see she's
disappeared and can't help but smile when he realises that she's done to him
what he's done to her so many times before…
SCENE'S TO
WATCH OUT FOR:
Amanda
'dancing' over to get stein then when filled with beer, 'dancing' back with the
lid open only to spill the drink all over Lee's face as she dodges out of
another customer's way.
All the times
people talk to Amanda then leave when she's distracted momentarily until she
finally manages to do the same thing to Lee at the end J
Lee and Amanda
breaking the vase and getting out of their bindings.
ROMANCE:
There is one
tiny part in this episode that always makes me go warm whenever I watch it and
that's when Lee watches Amanda get the stein out of the cabinet, then hold it
up and wave it around in time to the music - his smile when he sees her being
her usual subtle self, is just so adorable. A mixture of resignation and
amusement, you can see that he finds her actions endearing even though he knows
that she's bringing attention to herself. I just love that smile! One of the
first times it appears that he likes her because of her ways and not in
spite of them - very nice.
Another sweet
moment is when jealousy rears it's ugly head again within Lee as holds her hand
and all but drags her along with him as he asks her who the baron was and then
subsequently calls him a playboy type in order to put her off - pot calling the
kettle black there if you ask me…
And, although
not technically romance, he does show his caring side once again when he lets
her know that he was 'unofficially' worried about her being nearly run over and
then goes on to assure her that the Agency are keeping an eye on her family.
Naturally, when she coyly calls him on it, he shrugs it off and moves their
conversation back to business.
Near the end
of the mission, Lee tries to stop Amanda going with him but she stubbornly
points out that her family are there and he actually relents - even Billy and
Francine seemed surprised at his giving in. I mention this because it's
actually quite an emotionally charged moment - he doesn't want her there in
danger but can't turn her back because of her heartfelt appeal about her
family. He wouldn't have done that a few months ago and certainly wouldn't have
for anyone else I don't think - amazing what caring for someone can do J
QUOTES:
LEE: The
terrorists would smell and agent in a second, but not a tourist.
AMANDA: What
about a nervous tourist?
LEE: (after Amanda
spills beer on him) Will you, please, please, sit down!
AMANDA: What
did she say?
LEE: She wants
me to hear her confession.
AMANDA: (shocked) You wouldn’t!
LEE: No, I
wouldn’t. But it might be pretty interesting.
LEE: Who was
that guy?
AMANDA: He's a
baron.
LEE: Agh.
AMANDA: Klaus
van Eiger.
LEE: Oh, Klaus
van Eiger, yeah, I've heard of him. He's a playboy type.
LEE: What did
he tell you?
AMANDA: Well,
uh, he told me that the bone structure in my face was lovely.
LEE: Oh, well,
that's real vital information!
LEE: Amanda,
you've got to be more careful, I'm telling you.
AMANDA: Oh,
you saw the accident?
LEE: Accident?!
Yeah, yeah, I saw it. I was too far away to do anything about it though.
AMANDA: Oh,
but you were worried?
LEE: Well,
unofficially, yes.
BARON: (plucking
something from Lee's jacket) Lint.
LEE: Don't
know how I could've missed it.
AMANDA: Does
your head still hurt?
LEE: Hurt is
not quite the word I'd use.
AMANDA: How
about throb?
LEE: Good
word.
AMANDA: What
am I going to tell Mother? She must be worried sick, I didn't come home all
last night.
LEE: Yeah, I
know that.
AMANDA: I
didn't even call.
LEE: Tell her
you were tied up.
AMANDA: That's
not funny.
LEE: But it's
true.
AMANDA: (waiting for
Lee to cut through the ropes) Is this going to take long?
LEE: I'm
trying as fast as I can.
