"THE MIDAS TOUCH"
NOTABLE SCENE: I
don't usually do this but I just have to comment on the excellent chase scene
where Gambit and Purdey race through the back streets of London in pursuit of a
villain who's driving a rather nice Aston Martin.
There they are,
speeding along and they begin to have a discussion about who directed the film,
"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre." Quite calmly and matter of fact
as you please, like they're having a Sunday afternoon drive in the country…so
funny! Then to top the scene off, they add a brilliant comic touch of genius -
Racing through a market; a trader drops some six box loads of oranges onto the
Jag. In the very next scene, we see Purdey absently peeling an orange that must
have gone in through the window! Class.
Just goes to show
what wonderful directing and writing went into the show…so subtle and yet so
funny!
Anyway, onto the
quotes:
AFTER PURDEY HAS
JUST KILLED A VILLAIN
GAMBIT: Purdey, we
wanted him alive.
PURDEY: Difficult
decision…him or you.
HONG KONG HARRY:
That's all I know, Steed, I promise. I…I swear to you on my mother's grave.
STEED: Harry, you
couldn't even find your mother's grave. You sold it for development
years ago.
SING: Thank you
again, Mr. Steed. May you have the blessing of many sons.
STEED: In view of
the fact that I'm not married, many sons might prove rather an embarrassment.
AFTER STEED MAKES AN
ROGUISH SUGGESTION TO SING.
PURDEY: Steed,
you're becoming a roue.
STEED: An optimist.
WHILE SPEEDING ALONG
COUNTRY LANES TO STOP MIDAS FROM KILLING THE PRINCESS
STEED: You should
take up motor racing.
GAMBIT: I did. Le
Mans, Spa, Monza, Daytona…I crashed at them all.
